Artist Bio for Mark Tougias - |
|
Mark Tougias A Massachusetts native, Mark Tougias has been busy drawing and painting since early childhood. By age 16 he was exhibiting. In 1979 he graduated from the University of Massachusetts, where he studied Education and Art History. As a self taught artist, he as followed his own path, studying both nature and the works of a variety of masters. He has been particularly influenced by the French Barbizon painters, American Tonalists, the Impressionist movement and various American Regional schools from the early 1900’s. His primary focus has been the landscapes and much of his inspiration comes from his immediate environs in Vermont, New York, and his travels in Europe. Though some of his paintings depict recognizable locations, many simply capture a sense of a place, but not a particular place. This gives his paintings a wide universal appeal. His interest in the landscapes is also a vehicle for exploration and expression of light, tonal, qualities, and abstract form. For him, the painting often expresses itself on two levels; the literal and the non-literal . Tougias has exhibited widely in galleries, group shows and one man exhibits. He has traveled extensively throughout Europe, living and painting in various locales. He has had twenty two man shows and has won numerous awards. Mark is a member of Gloucester’s North Shore Arts Association, Southern Vermont Art Center, and a former member of Boston’s Copley Society. He is listed in Marquis Who’s who in America and Who’s who in the World. His work has been collected in the U.S., Canada, and numerous European countries.
